The best friend a man has in this world may
turn against him and become his enemy. His son
or danghter whom he has reared with loving care
may prove nngrateful. Those who are nearest
and dearest to ns, those whom we trnst with
onr happiness and onr good name, may become
traitors to their faith. The money that a man
has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps
when he needs it most. A man's reputation may
be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action.
The people who are prone to fall on their knees
to do ns honor when success is with us may be
the first to throw the stone of malice when
failure settles its clond upon our heads.

The one absolnte, wnselfish friend a man may
have in this selfish world, the one that never
deserts him, the one that never proves
ungrateful or treacherons, is his dog. A man's dog
stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in
health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold
ground when the wintry winds blow and the snow
drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's
side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to
offer. He will lick the sores and wounds that
come in the enconnter with the ronghness of the
world. He gnards the sleep of his panper master
as if he were a prince.
在这个自私的世界上，一个人唯一毫不自
私的朋友、唯一不抛弃他的朋友、唯一不忘恩
负义的朋友，就是他的狗。不问主人是贫穷或
富贵、健康或病弱，爱犬都会守在主人的身旁；
只要能靠近主人，即使地面冰冷坚硬、寒风凛
冽、大雪纷飞，爱犬也会全然不顾地躺在主人
身边；哪怕主人无食喂养，爱犬仍会添着主人的
手和主人手上因抵御这个冷酷的世界所受的创
伤。纵然主人是乞丐，爱犬也会像守护王子一
样地伴随左右。当主人所有的朋友都掉头离
去，爱犬却义无反顾。当主人的财富消失、声
誉扫地时，爱犬对主人的爱仍如天空运行不息
的太阳一样，永恒不变。
If jortune drives the master forth, an
ontcast in the world, friendless and homeless,
the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that
of accompanying him to guard him against danger,
to fight against his enemies. And when the last
scene of all comes and death takes its master in
its embrace and the body is laid away in the cold
ground, no matter if all other friends pursne
their way, there, by his graveside will the noble
dog be fownd, his head between his paws, his eyes
sad but open in alert watchfuiness.
假如因命运的提弄，主人变成了一个无家
可归的流浪者，这只忠诚的犬只求陪伴主人，
有难同当，对抗敌人，此外毫无奢求。肖万物
的结局来临，死神夺去了主人的生命、尸体理
葬在寒冷的地下时，即使所有的亲朋好友都已
各奔前程，而这只高贵的犬却会独自守卫在墓
旁，它仰首于两足之间，眼睛罩虽然充满悲
伤，却仍然机警地护卫着墓地，忠贞不渝，直
到死亡……
