Once upon a time, in January 1916, there was a strange situation in the Netherlands. There were some high-ranking officials who were just too reluctant to defend the country's overseas territories.
Colonel Jakobs was really frustrated with this. So, he decided to tell a story to make fun of them.
He said, "Imagine there was a big farm. The owner of the farm had a group of managers. One day, some robbers came and said they wanted to take a part of the farm. But these managers, instead of fighting back or even trying to protect the farm, they just stood there and did nothing. They were too scared or just didn't care about the farm at all.
You know what? The farm wasn't just land and crops. It was the owner's pride and the hard work of everyone who lived there. But these managers were more worried about keeping their comfortable positions and not getting into any trouble.
They forgot that if the farm was taken piece by piece, there would be nothing left for them or anyone else. They were like blind mice, only thinking about the moment and not the future.
And that's exactly what these officials are doing when they don't want to defend our overseas territories. They're just being selfish and short-sighted. They don't understand that if we don't protect what's ours, we'll lose everything in the end."
Colonel Jakobs hoped that this story would wake those officials up and make them realize their responsibility to protect the Netherlands and its overseas territories.
