Synopsis

The Nether King has sent assassins to hunt down the last Ender Watchers. They flee from this danger, yet running is only ever a temporary solution.

Plot

Wishing Dead starts with Stella and Rain on a boat, looking back at Zeganirn. Stella and Rain start arguing about whether or not they should go back to help Zeganirn. Rain wins the argument by saying that he and Stella will carry the torch of the Ender Watchers together.

It speeds up to night, where Nether portals start appearing in the Coven Village. Three of the Assassins are shown to exit, with the Blaze and Wither Skeleton assassins, Ifrit and Amon studying the chest. When Ifrit realizes it's a trap, Zeganirn leaps and teleports to the Assassins, knocking Ifrit into the river, and stabbing Amon. He then teleports, knocking down Namtar, and savagely bites his head off. Zeganirn witnesses more portals appearing, and Wither Skeletons and Pigmen charging towards him. Zeganirn parries the blows from Djinn, the last assassin, before being besieged by oncoming forces.

Meanwhile, Rain and Stella flee away from the Mystic Forest and into the tundra. They set up camp for the night, however their momentary peace is shattered as an injured Djinn catches up with them, flinging two knives coated in a special demon poison.

Rain is successful in deflecting one of the knives, however the other strikes Stella in the stomach, killing her[1]. Overcome by rage, Rain picks up the Ender Greatsword, despite its weight, and fights Djinn. However, due to his inexperience with it, Rain is unable to use it effectively and ends up getting slashed across the left eye. Rain retaliates by breaking Djinn's arm and kicking him into a tree. Before Djinn can rise, Rain smashes Djinn's head against the tree twice, stabs the knife he had attempted to strike Rain with in his eye, and then kicks him into the nearby snow. Rain’s left eye opens to reveal it has changed to an appearance similar to that of Ceris and the Ender People, and when Djinn tries to get up, he is decapitated.

In the morning, Rain examines the knife that struck Stella, eye now normal. He carries Stella on his back through the forestry and towards a cliffside, where the Wither Book that had been following Stella suddenly dropped to the ground, signifying the completion of the Demon Curse from Djinn's knives. Stella awakens in a feral state and thrashes on Rain’s back, knocking him down the cliff and making him lose his swords.

When he comes too, it is revealed that Stella has transformed in a Netherkin. Stella attacks Rain, with him able to dodge the first attack before being forced to block the next triage of attacks. Noticing his reluctance, Demon Stella takes advantage of this, punching him in the gut before unleashing a Shoryuken-style attack on him, launching him backwards. Rain, in anger, summons the Wither Book to his side, and uses a spell on Stella. She releases a deafening shriek, causing Rain to drop the book to cover his ears whilst her humanity is forced back into her. She punches Rain into a tree, which knocks him out, before "waking up" and realizing she what she’s done. Stella sheds tears in shock, before noticing Kane and Ciara, having been attracted to the area by her scream. Kane aims his crossbow and Ciara readies herself to pounce, to which Stella flees the scene, Rain awakening soon after, his left eye once again turning to its Ender Form.

Trivia

This episode marks the debut of the Netherbane, a new faction created to delay the invasion of the Overworld by the Nether.

This episode also marks the re-emergence of Netherkin following Abigail's death in Just So You Know.

Despite this, Stella and Abigail's Netherkin forms are very different (see this page here for more information.)

Djinn is the only assassin who survived Zeganirn, implying the fate of Zeganirn that would be confirmed in Falling.

In a promotional render for Wishing Dead, Rain's left eye has changed into a similar form to Ceris' and the Ender People, which is most likely a side effect of the Ender Greatsword.

The episode draws many contrasts to the first episode of the manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Rain carries an injured Stella through the tundra, but falls off a cliff when she wakes up demonfied. -> Tanjiro carries an injured Nezuko through the tundra, but falls off a cliff when she wakes up demonfied.

Rain is forced to fight a Demon Stella, and restores her humanity through the fight -> Tanjiro is forced to fight a Feral Nezuko and during the fight her humanity is restored.

The only real difference between these two is that Rain used a spell to return Stella to her normal self, being knocked out in the process. Nezuko seemingly recovers her own humanity due to seeing herself fight Tanjiro.

Stella sheds tears seeing what she has done to Rain -> Nezuko cries seeing herself attack her brother.
